Tea helps exam performance - and girls are on the boil

A recent TNS survey of exam-takers has  shown that boys may be harming their chances with their choice of beverage.  Around two thirds of boys claim they rely on high caffeine drinks to get them through the stresses of exam season, whereas girls are much more likely to reach for a cup of tea.  In fact twice as many boys as girls make regular use of high caffeine drinks.

Experts have warned that high amounts of caffeine can in fact impair concentration, even if it keeps you going for longer.  In contrast a small amount of caffeine, around the amount found in a nice cup of tea, has been shown to help concentration and aid in a restful night's sleep.

According to independent nutritionist, Dr. Carrie Ruxton, "there is a wealth of research that shows a moderate amount of caffeine can actually improve performance, rather than impair it.  Tea will ensure students are kept hydrated and because of the moderate amount of caffeine in a cup of tea, 4 cups a day are just enough to pep them up and help them concentrate without any negative side effects."
